How OCR Works: Turn Scans Into Searchable Text

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) converts a picture of text into real text you can select, copy and search. A scanned page is just pixels to a computer, which is why you cannot highlight a word in a scanned contract. OCR reads those pixels, recognizes the characters, and rebuilds the words and lines.

From pixels to characters

The OCR tool renders each PDF page as a high-resolution image and passes it to Tesseract, a recognition engine running in your browser. You can also drop a JPG or PNG directly. The engine finds the text regions, identifies each character and gives every word a confidence value.

Accuracy depends on picking the right language, because each language model knows which letters and combinations are likely. It uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and most of the pipeline runs on your device.

How retrieval works

When you open a document, the studio splits the text into overlapping passages and turns each into an embedding, a numerical fingerprint of its meaning, using a compact MiniLM model that runs in your browser through Transformers.js. Embeddings are cached locally, so re-opening the same file is fast. Your question is embedded the same way and matched against every passage. Only the few most relevant passages, not the whole document, go to the AI provider you choose.

Answers you can check

Because answers are built from retrieved passages, each one cites the pages it used, so you can verify it against the source. The same engine handles focused tasks: summarizing long reports, pulling fields out of invoices, reviewing contracts for parties, obligations, payment terms and risky clauses, extracting tables, and translating text.

You control cost and privacy

Answers are generated with your own API key for Claude (Anthropic), OpenAI or Google Gemini. The key is stored only in the current browser session. Indexing and search never leave your device, and if you never use the AI features, nothing leaves your browser at all.

Privacy and Security by Design

Online PDF tools usually upload your file, process it on their server and send it back. Your documents, often full of names, financial figures, health details or trade secrets, cross the internet and sit on someone else's computer, however briefly.

AI PDF Studio works the other way round. The app runs in your browser and reads files from your device into the browser's own memory. They are never uploaded, queued or stored on a remote server. That makes it suitable for confidential and regulated material, because the data does not leave the machine.

The only feature that talks to an outside service is the optional AI chat. It uses a key you provide and sends only the small passages needed to answer your question. For teams, the AI step can be routed through your own server endpoint so the provider key never reaches the browser, while the document itself still stays local.

We are also clear about limits. Real password encryption cannot be done safely with a pure in-browser library, so the studio does not pretend to offer it. The Redact tool flattens pages so removed content is truly gone, not just covered with a black shape.
